All students from Prep to Year 6 participate in weekly Auslan (Australian Sign Language) lessons, developing valuable language skills, knowledge and an understanding of different ways to communicate. Learning Auslan encourages students to appreciate diversity, respect others and recognise the importance of inclusive communication within our school and wider community.
Learning a visual language provides benefits for all students, regardless of their background, abilities or communication needs. It supports the development of visual attention, memory, concentration, non-verbal communication and expressive skills, while fostering empathy, confidence and a sense of belonging. Learning Auslan also broadens students’ understanding of language and communication, deepens their awareness of Deaf culture and promotes respect for the Deaf community.
Throughout their Auslan learning journey, students develop skills across three key areas: receptive communication, including watching, understanding and responding to signs; expressive communication, including using signs, facial expressions and body language to communicate meaning; and language, culture and community, exploring Deaf culture and understanding the importance of Auslan as a rich and meaningful language. Through these experiences, students gain practical communication skills and contribute to building a more inclusive, respectful and connected school community.
