At Windsor Primary School, our approach to teaching reading and writing is grounded in rigorous, evidence-based research about how children learn literacy skills. Our staff use the Science of Reading and the Big 6 framework to guide instruction, ensuring that all students develop the essential knowledge and skills required to become confident and capable readers and writers.
In Foundation to Year 2, we use the Little Learners Love Literacy program alongside decodable readers and online resources to build strong foundations in phonemic awareness, phonics, oral language, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. These early years focus on systematic, explicit teaching that supports every child’s reading journey.
From Years 3 to 6, students continue developing their literacy skills through rich and challenging novel studies, exploring a wide range of genres and text types. Spelling instruction becomes more sophisticated, incorporating morphology (word parts and structure) and etymology (word origins), while grammar is taught explicitly to strengthen writing and comprehension.
Across all year levels, students are immersed in varied and meaningful literacy experiences that build both skill and complexity over time. Our consistent, structured approach supports all learners to achieve success and develop a deep and lasting understanding of language and literacy.
